Cherish and Devote (YSM)

One day, when I was surfing the Internet, I saw these pictures by accident. I never imagined that even today in China, there are still some people suffering poverty to this extent. Seeing the poor children, who though live under such extremely arduous conditions, still continue their study, I feel moved and shameful, compared their insistent and studious spirit with my laziness.
We spend our time sleeping, playing computer games; we go shopping crazily on weekends; we spoil food; we eat KFC, McDonald’s, Pizza Hut; we enjoy ourselves on Roller Coaster, Ferris Wheel; we go after fashion…
While at the same time, they can hardly have a full meal; they have to walk several kilometers’ mountain road to school; they seldom see their parents who work far away from them all the year around; they don’t know what the outside world is like; they have no idea what is skyscraper, laptop, hand phone; they are eager to study but they even can’t afford a pencil; they shyly receive interviews from different people and wait to see something may change afterwards…We feel sorry for them; we show sympathy to them; we cry; we donate… On TVs, we often see people’s considerate care for them, hand in hand, shoulder by shoulder, while when it all comes to the end, the village return to calmness, they still shiver in the cold during winter, they still pull their tiny bodies to chop firewood, they still look up at the faraway sky, missing their parents.
Some of them have never stepped out of the mountain. They bear the harsh weather, barren land. They want to get rid of poverty, and they know that knowledge is power, but few people truly want to step into the mountain to tell them what the Internet is, what multi-media is, what genetic engineering is… Look at their eyes which are longing for study; look at the heavy burden on their small backs; look at poor conditions they are in… why shouldn’t we feel satisfied about our life? It is said that “Man are born equal.” but see, is it really equal?
Please, next time, when you feel bored about study, when you waste your time doing nothing, when you complain the food, think of the poor children in mountains. If you can, please stretch out your hands to hold them, to help these children.

  1. Thank you for your article which pulled me out of the trap of the complainments of hard work, bad food and the monotonous life every day. After reading your article, I realize how lucky I am now and how precious it is to have this chance to study here with good tutors, good canteens, even air condition in the classroom. My situation is much better than the children in the pictures. I feel guilty for my waste of time on computers and something else. Comparing with them, my difficulties are so small that even can be ignored. I have no excuse not to work hard. Again thank you for your article which encourages me to work hard and best wish to the children.
