Tricks in beauty and slimming advertisements(JEGA)

What I want tosay first is that I originally wrote this as a journal, but I knew later that I wrote on a wrong topic. So I publish it as a blog.
Today, more and more women try to lose weight and to be beautiful, as people, or at least women themselves think slimmer and more beautiful women are more charming and have an advantage in finding jobs. Interestingly, some men think the same and want to be charming too. To satisfy people’s desire of being charming and more importantly to make their own pockets full, businessmen put out millions of products, advertising everyday either on TV or in newspapers everyday to attract their generous customer to buy, buy, buy. But no one is foolish in fact, and they won’t spend money on what they consider useless. Therefore, the first task of businessmen is to let customers believe in their product through their advertisements. How do they make advertisement believable? They usually do it using one of the three methods, so we can generally clarify into three categories just according to the method they use.
The first and most common method advertisements use to enable us to trust is to find a famous star to be the mouthpiece of their products. In this kind of advertisements, the star will appear in very short films and express that the products are good in a proper way. These advertisements last less than a few seconds and usually on popular channels if on TV. And if they are in newspapers, the stars will always show in right poses to let the products stand out, and of course these pictures occupy big space on well-known papers and are always found in noticeable place. The companies put a lot of money into this kind of advertisements, and usually only rich companies can afford the expenses to invite stars to act and then put the advertisements on TV and newspapers, as the more famous the stars are, the more they will charge, and a few seconds on popular channels can sometimes cost millions. Why are businessmen willing to spend money on this? Because they will get back more from the advertisements, which attract more customers. It seems a little silly for us to believe a product can make us as beautiful and slim as the star advertising the products just because the star and the product appear together and apparently the star is using it and it works, but that’s just what we do. Fans who are crazy about their idols will buy whatever the idols recommend, while others would rather buy something advertised by famous people, for at least they can be more reliable than those without advertisement or advertised without famous people. We are watching such kind of advertisements on Channel One, Two…and read in Today and Times everyday and senselessly pushed to buy them. Will we become more beautiful with these products? Sometime, perhaps, whereas, sometimes, the other way around.
The second kind of advertisements uses another method to make them believable most of the time without superstars. In such advertisements, many unfamiliar faces will appear on the screen saying they have used the products. The director will put out their former pictures or videos before using the product, which are different from how they look now. They either have much better skin, better shape, or anything, that is, in all, they are more beautiful and charming. Later, they will explain how the product works and how grateful they are that the product makes them more beautiful. These advertisements can last very long for 10 to 30 minutes or even longer, because so many people act and say something. Since it’s too expensive to advertise on famous channels and the companies that advertise like this can’t be famous or rich, so this kind of advertisements is broadcast on shopping channels or less popular channels like local channels again and again until make you bring up. Anyway, they make sense, and they are really attractive to those who are not rich and also want to be nicer and they also work for credulous people who want to change their situations quickly and easily. However, do the products really have the magical function to change you into a completely new and beautiful person? I myself don’t think so. Considering the high technology recently, I believe computer can change a beauty into a beast or a beast into beauty, after I watched many fiction films. And I should tell the truth that I’ve never heard of these companies. Shall we trust them? If their products are good, why aren’t their companies famous at all and why do these advertisements disappear in a short period of time? When we can’t explain everything, will we use them? I don’t know. But one thing I know is that they have customers, but I don’t think they will work as well on the customers.
If you think the second category is in some way magical, while the third will make you mad. In such category of advertisement, they will experiment on the stage either on real people or some instruments. They will just show you how magic show is. They sometimes let see how the products will protect the surface of an apple, or show you how the medicine clear all the fat in the pipe. The rest of time, they will either ask someone to come on the stage and try the products, or they will go to the street and ask some “strange” people to try products. Then, something unbelievable will happen surely: the effects of the products come out immediately. The scene may be like this: one side of a women’s face which is applied to the product is much whiter than the other side. I would like to say I would rather trust the second kind of advertisement. For this kind make me confused. Can changes come so fast? Why don’t they try to be a magician. The category of advertisements is to some extent absurd.
I classify the popular beauty and slimming advertisements I’ve seen in China into the above three categories. I know as the beauty industry in developed countries is more developed and they have more ways to advertise. I also heard that in American they make TV programs that seem to tell people how to lose weight and how to be beautiful, but in fact they make products like books and food according the concepts they transmit to audiences and let people buy them. It’s the wisest idea I’ve seen. Customers won’t sense it easily, and think the advertisers aren’t persuading them but doing benefits to them. It’s people’s nature to pursue beauty and charm and other people want to make money from this. Therefore, people will always come up with new ways to advertise. Then as there are so many advertises here with so many tricks here, which product should we trust? I don’t know. But I will use some of them anyway, so will must of us.
