I have always been interested in biological studies since I was a junior high student. But when it comes to choosing my future major, problems arise. Few PRC students choose to study life science because it is very demanding in terms of the technical vocabulary and experimental skills. Further more, the graduates of life science have bigger difficulties than others to find a job, and many of them have to go into jobs that do not use their proffessional knowlege. In addition, the biology sicence syllabus requirment of high schools in China is not as high as that of junior colleges in Singapore, because in the Chinese fundamental education system more emphasis is put on maths and physics so that biology is kind of neglected. This makes PRC students less competent in studies of life science, and our seniors have warned us that if we study life science, we have a bigger chance of fail and being sent back to China.
But I really have a strong passion for biological sciences and I am sure it is not just a blind interest. I borrowed some books on life sciences from the library and tried to find out what exactly I am interested for and I can see it is the order and laws of the living world. Even the basic unit cell has such orderly functioning ways that I believe a single cell is more delicate than the most advanced computer. Then comes tissues, organs, organisms, species, genus, families, classes, phylums. And the living things and the environment they are living in make up the biosphere. I just find this is fanscinating to me. I want to study the secrets of the abnormal reproducing of cancer cells and I want to discover the myths behind the species explosions which the evolution theory of Darwin cannot explain. There is so much I want to discover and I find beauty of order in it.
Despite the challenges I will face studying biological sciences, I want to choose it. When one has strong passion for a career, it is likely that he will succeed in the area. When one has little interest in what he is doing, there is no point even he is doing well. So I will listen to my inner voices and follow them. And to make up the linguistic disadvantages, I have began learning the glossary of biological terms this week. Pursue my dream and I am not going to regret.
