We Are All Animals 5. Until All Is Done (YAP 20)

Have you ever heard some little chirring sound late after ten pm in our hostle? I have, but I do not know where it is from until last Friday night. At that night, my friend happened to talk about wall geckos with me, and he told me they were wall geckos who made that chirring sound. Then I made up my mind to see those naughty creatures.

I went to the daylight lamp instinctively. I knew the daylight lamps are their dining rooms, and sure enough there were two wall geckos hunting for mosquitoes. The two were really proficient hunters. None of the mosquitoes flew by the daylight lamp could escape alive. So the hunters kept eating and the mosquitoes kept flying to hell. Soon, I noticed that the wall geckos’ stomachs were plumped; they were filled up with the rich meal. Amazingly, both of them kept staying on the lamp and eating mosquitoes. Did I misunderstand them as they were full? I stayed there just as they did. I wanted to see when they would finish their meal. I watched them for about half an hour and I became tired and giddy after lifting my head up for so long time.

Then I knew I shall give up. According to their behavior, they would not stop until there was no mosquito any more. I could not figure out what was really in their minds, did not they know eating too much was bad for their health? I just saw they tried their best to wipe out all the mosquitoes, regardless of the terminal boredom to stay in one place which was not satisfying at all. This reminded me of a hero who was named Zhu Geliang. He would not stop his work to rest for a while, until he thought all was done. And this is the very good merits all of us should gain to succeed.

  1. Are you sure those chirping sounds come from "wall geckos"? Because I think they are loud enough to come from creatures like birds or at least some bigger ones. However, I had never heard of such strange sounds in China, so I'm even not sure myself. They're pretty cute anyway.
Actually, when I saw "According to their behavior, they would not stop until there was no mosquito any more", I didn't think of their perseverance, on the contrary, they were a little bit stupid in my eye, for they never knew they had eaten enough. Nevertheless, nobody dares to say being stupid is a bad or unlucky thing, considering the fortune and success Forest Gump has shown us. Isn't it?~~
Or you have your better understanding, never mind.

  2. You are really fond of animals, I wonder why your favorite subject is physics instead of biology. But I am not so sure that your guess is correct that it is the geckos who make the strange sound. They are soundless creatures in my impression. But never mind, little children who are imaginative like you are also attracted by the thrilling nature made of numerous fancinating creatures like ants, birds, geckos and so on. Maybe you can consider life science as your major, it's always good to have a passion for what you study.

  3. you still talked about the animals.haha, why?you are so interested in animals?ranging from big animals to little animals ,the topic could not leave the animals.your oral report, your blog ,or anything else are about animals. I think you must have some feeling with animals so your mind is full of animals. how about studying life science or biological engineering in the college life instead of physics? and then you could do anything you want on animals.good idea?haha.and what I want to say more is that we actually come from animals but we still have some difference from animals. you could say you are animal, but you could not say we are animals, you should not have the right to stand for us, making me as an animal.am I right?haha....

  4. Hi Jindun, I suspect they are lizards. Geckos are found more in dark and damp places. They are bigger and black and make louder clicking noises. I have not seen geckos in our modern houses. They serve a useful purpose in houses as they help us get rid of insects. You have a very interesting sentence 'I knew the daylight lamps are their dining rooms,' - it creates an image of a feast to enjoy. When I was growing up, my grandfather kept rabbits. We often ate them, but since I got married I have eaten any. I like SMALL dogs and I have one. He keeps me company all the time. Do you have a dog?
